Water Safety

We believe water safety is not just a lesson it’s a lifelong skill that supports enjoyment, wellbeing, and confidence in and around water.

Whether you are learning to swim, attending school programmes, taking part in aqua fitness, training for fitness, or joining us during the holidays, we are committed to helping everyone feel confident and safe in the water.

Makino Aquatic Centre is proud to provide a welcoming, safe aquatic environment that supports learning, fitness, recreation, and community connection.

Water Safety is Built into What We Do

Water safety is found throughout all our aquatic programmes. Our instructors support swimmers of all ages and abilities to:

  • Stay calm and in control in the water.
  • Recognise potential risks.
  • Make safe choices in pools and open-water environments.
  • Know when and how to get help.

This approach supports both recreational and fitness-based aquatic activity, creating a safe and positive environment for everyone who uses our facility.

Water Safety for Schools & Early Learning

We work closely with schools and early learning centres to support water safety education beyond regular swim lessons.

Preschool Visits

Preschool sessions introduce simple, important safety concepts such as:

  • Beach flags and safe swimming areas.
  • Sun safety and protection.
  • Safe behaviour around water.

These sessions are interactive and age appropriate.

Primary School Programmes (Ages 5–8)

We offer in-class water safety programmes that can be delivered at schools and supported with a follow-up pool session at Makino, helping students apply their learning in a practical setting.

Holiday Water & Boat Safety Programmes

During the school holidays, we offer dedicated Water Safety and Boat Safety sessions as part of our holiday programme.

These sessions provide participants with opportunities to:

  • Learn when and why life jackets should be worn.
  • Practice correctly fitting and wearing life jackets.
  • Take part in safe, supervised rescue scenarios.
  • Learn about hazards commonly found around water and boats.

These practical, hands-on sessions help build awareness and confidence in real world situations.

Rescue Awareness & Practical Skills

Our holiday water safety programmes may also include:

  • Introduction to safe wet and dry rescue techniques.
  • Understanding when it is unsafe to enter the water.
  • Recognising hazards in different aquatic environments.

All activities are delivered in a controlled and supportive setting.

Tailor-Made Sessions for Groups & Organisations

We offer customised water safety sessions for schools, community groups, sports clubs, and organisations. Sessions can be designed to suit specific needs or environments, including pools, rivers, beaches, or boating contexts.

Water Safety Tips

We encourage everyone using the Makino Aquatic Centre environment to follow rules and guidelines:

  • Be aware of limits and swim within them.
  • Supervise others when responsible for children or groups.
  • Wear life jackets when boating or around open water.
  • Follow the reach or throw, don’t go rescue principle.
