The Big Swim
A Community Effort for Coastguard New Zealand
Makino Aquatic Centre is partnering with The Big Swim, a nationwide fundraising initiative taking place throughout June, to support Coastguard New Zealand. This event invites swimmers to set personal swimming goals and gather sponsorship to fund vital services that keep New Zealanders safe on the water.
What is The Big Swim?
The Big Swim is a challenge where individuals or teams commit to swimming set distances throughout the month of June. Participants raise funds from their communities to support:
- Training of volunteers
- Maintenance of 63 rescue vessels
- Equipment upgrades for over 2,000 Coastguard volunteers
In 2024 alone, the initiative raised over $350,000 with 1,200+ swimmers joining the cause. With an average of seven water-related incidents per day, this effort is both timely and impactful.
How to Participate
Swimmers can choose from the following distance challenges:
- Big – 5km (7 laps/day)
- Bigger – 10km (14 laps/day)
- Biggest – 20km (28 laps/day)
- Or set their own custom goal
Participants receive a limited-edition Big Swim t-shirt and wristband in honour for their commitment.
Before arriving at the Makino Aquatic Centre, please check swimming lane availability: 25m and 50m Pool Availability | Manawatu
Once you raise over $100, reach out to Big Swim for your wristband and present it to Makino staff for free pool entry. Every lap you swim helps support Coastguard New Zealand in saving lives at sea.
Why It Matters
This is an opportunity to swim not just for fitness or recreation, but for a purpose. This isn’t just about swimming laps, it’s about playing your part in a national effort to keep our whānau and friends safe.
