Why Pool Temperature Matters

Ever wondered why the pools at the Makino Aquatic Centre (MAC) are different temperatures? Each pool is designed for a specific purpose, from swimming lessons and helping young children build confidence in the water to lane swimming, aqua fitness and recreational play.

Aquatic Services Manager Aimee Flanders says the temperatures are carefully selected based on how each pool is primarily used. “Everyone experiences temperature differently. Comfort can depend on factors such as your body, activity level, age and how you are using the pool. While not every temperature will feel ideal for every person, the settings are chosen to provide the best overall conditions for each pool.”

Pool temperatures are checked every three hours by senior lifeguards using a waterproof temperature probe to ensure they remain within their operating ranges. Temperatures can naturally vary throughout the day due to factors such as swimmer numbers, water movement and water lost through normal use.

The indoor 25-metre lane pool has a target temperature of around 28°C, reflecting its use for lap swimming and fitness activities.

The learn-to-swim pool is maintained at around 32°C to provide a comfortable environment for swimming lessons and young learners, while the children’s play pool sits at around 31°C for recreation and water play.

Comfort also extends beyond the water. The air temperature around the indoor pools is maintained at 26°C to help swimmers transition out of the water, reduce condensation and create a pleasant environment throughout the centre.

“Our temperatures are based on what we believe provides the most effective and practical environment for each pool,” says Flanders. “The settings reflect the primary use of each space and help ensure the facility can be enjoyed year-round.”
