Makino Backs Tawaki for Bird of the Year
Makino Aquatic Centre (MAC) has thrown its support behind the tawaki, or Fiordland crested penguin, and is encouraging everyone to flock to the polls when voting opens on Friday 4 September.
With 70 birds in the running, competition will be heated, but Team Tawaki isn't about to wing it. Aquatic Programmes Leader Renee Dunbar said the tawaki was a natural fit for the Makino. “The tawaki spends much of its life in the water, survives some of New Zealand's toughest conditions and has plenty of character. We think it's a worthy contender for Bird of the Year."
Found in the remote rainforest and coastlines of Fiordland, the tawaki is considered a species in trouble and faces ongoing challenges including changing ocean conditions and marine pollution.
"We're encouraging everyone to be a good egg and get involved. Bird of the Year is a fun way to learn more about New Zealand's incredible native wildlife while supporting conservation."
