Making Waves, Preventing Falls

The MAC’s Aqua Fit and Aqua Flow classes have been recognised by Age Concern Palmerston North and Districts as approved Community Strength & Balance Classes.

The certification confirms both programmes meet all eight evidence-based criteria designed to help reduce falls and fractures in older adults. For participants, it provides added reassurance that they are taking part in safe, effective exercise designed with their needs in mind.

The low-impact classes offer a supportive aquatic environment where participants can exercise at their own pace and work within their individual abilities. Alongside improving strength and balance, regular activity can help people maintain confidence and independence in everyday life.

There is also a strong social element. The classes provide a welcoming space for people to stay active, meet others and enjoy the benefits of being part of a group.

“It’s really nice recognition of what our aqua classes can offer our community,” says Renee Dunbar, Aquatic Programmes Leader. “They’re not just about coming along for a workout. They help people work on their strength, balance and confidence, while also providing a social and welcoming environment.”

For Renee, one of the strengths of aqua exercise is that it can suit people with different levels of fitness and experience.

“Aqua is great because everyone can work at their own level, so you don’t have to be super fit or have lots of experience to come along and give it a go,” she says. “The recognition gives people extra reassurance around the benefits of the classes.”

The certification also strengthens the connection between the MAC and Age Concern Palmerston North and Districts, while helping raise awareness of opportunities for older adults to stay active in the community.

Aqua Fitness classes at the MAC offer an affordable way to stay active and healthy. Classes are $9 per session, or $7.50 for Senior/Community Services Card holders, with 10-visit passes also available. Class times and further information can be found on the MAC website.

“We’d love to encourage more older adults to come along, stay active and enjoy the social side of the classes as well,” says Renee.
