Makino’s Matariki Journey

Matariki celebrations are now moving into Week 5, Waipunarangi (June 1–7), at the Makino Aquatic Centre (MAC) marking the halfway point in their 10-week programme. This is a unique community programme bringing the stories of the Matariki stars to life through water, wellbeing, and shared weekly experiences.

Since early May, visitors to the MAC have watched the facility gradually change week by week through themed activities, displays, and moments of connection inspired by each star of the Matariki cluster. The programme will continue through to July, leading into a Matariki Pool Party celebration.

Created by MAC Programmes Leader Renee Dunbar, the initiative reflects the 2026 Matariki theme, Matariki Herenga Waka – For Everyone, celebrating inclusion, unity, and shared heritage.

“We wanted people to experience Matariki in a way that feels natural, welcoming, and fun,” says Renee. “Whether you are learning to swim, bringing the kids along, joining aqua classes, or simply coming in for a swim, there is something here for everyone to enjoy and connect with.”

The 10-week programme follows each of the Matariki stars, beginning with Matariki in early May and continuing through Pōhutukawa, Waitī, Waitā, and now Waipunarangi  the star associated with rain and the life-giving waters of the sky.

Over the coming weeks, Makino will introduce themed experiences inspired by the Matariki stars, including Ururangi, Tupuānuku, Tupuārangi, and Hiwa-i-te-Rangi.

Ururangi encourages us to try something new, whether that’s aqua fitness, swimming some lengths, or enjoying our weekend inflatable sessions. Hiwa-i-te-Rangi is about setting goals and looking ahead, whether that means swimming a full length, building confidence in the water, or taking on a new challenge.

Week 8, Tupuārangi, will celebrate the environment and outdoor spaces.  For the Makino this means including the outdoor pool with a Mid-Winter Polar Plunge, braving the colder temperatures for a fun seasonal challenge.

The celebrations will conclude with the Makino Matariki Pool Party on Thursday, 9 July, from 10.30am to 2.00pm. This family-friendly event will feature inflatables, pool games, music, spot prizes, and Matariki-themed arts activities, where children can share their own experiences of celebrating Matariki, the Māori New Year.

“By the end of the programme, we hope people feel like they have been part of something special together,” says Renee.
