Ideas that Float
Six vibrant floating boards now hang above the Learn to Swim pool, providing children with a fun visual focus as they practice back floating. By encouraging swimmers to look upwards, relax their bodies and trust the water, the installation is helping create a calmer and more interesting learning environment.
Swim Instructor Sara Kennard has already seen the positive impact, with one child who previously found back floating challenging now confidently floating on their back with the boards giving something to support their focus.
Designed by local artist Joe McMenamin, the boards feature cheerful, timeless illustrations including dinosaurs, vehicles, farm animals, ocean creatures, space themes and fairies. The artwork adds colour, imagination and warmth to the Learn to Swim environment, supporting babies, toddlers, preschoolers and children.
The project was completed with the help of local businesses Beauchamp Signs & Memorials printing the artwork and Central Engineering completing the installation.
Kennard said the addition reflects the importance of creating a positive and supportive learning environment for children as they develop their swimming skills. “As instructors, we know that learning to float can be a big step for many children. Having something engaging to focus on helps them relax, feel comfortable in the water and build confidence. It’s rewarding to see children who may have struggled with a skill gain trust in themselves and the water. These boards are a simple addition, but they make a real difference to children’s learning experiences,” she said.
The new installation is another step in Makino Aquatic Centre’s commitment to making swimming lessons safer, calmer and more enjoyable.
