Green Prescription, Real Results

Local adults are improving their physical and mental wellbeing through a free 10-week Green Prescription (GRx) programme delivered by Sport Manawatū, utilising the Makino Aquatic Centre (MAC) for the programme's aqua sessions.

Available to adults aged 18 and over, the programme supports participants to become more physically active through personalised activity plans, one-on-one consultations, telephone coaching and education on healthy lifestyle choices. Participants can join through a referral from a healthcare professional or by self-referring directly to Sport Manawatū.

Green Prescription Coordinator Katrina Gemmell says the programme is designed to help people overcome barriers to physical activity and develop sustainable habits that improve their overall health and wellbeing.

“The programme provides a safe, supportive space where people can come together, build confidence and feel encouraged without judgement. People leave feeling more positive, motivated and socially connected,” she says.

Gemmell, who has helped coordinate the programme with Sport Manawatū for 16 years, says while many people initially join to improve their fitness, the benefits often extend far beyond physical health.

Participants take part in water-based activities at the MAC, alongside education sessions covering nutrition, mental wellbeing, physical exercise and diabetes management. The programme is tailored to individual needs and encourages participants to progress at their own pace.

MAC Aquatics Activity Leader Catherine Todd says the programme is helping create lasting health outcomes for the community.

“We are proud to work alongside Sport Manawatū to support both the physical and mental wellbeing of our community. It's rewarding to see participants grow in confidence and continue using our facility after the programme ends,” she says.
