Makino Aquatic Centre’s Feline Favourite

You may have seen Mac lounging behind the reception desk or sunning herself by the footpath. She is the unofficial yet beloved staff member at the Makino Aquatic Centre.

Mac first arrived at Makino a year and a half ago as a stray. With no home to call her own, the Makino team welcomed her with open arms. Since then, she’s become an integral part of the facility’s day-to-day life, earning her place with charm, cuddles, and an impressive talent for brightening everyone’s day.

Although she doesn’t clock in or handle bookings, Mac works hard in her own way. She has a designated chair behind the reception desk, where she often sits beside the team, calmly observing the day’s activity. Her presence is especially cherished by Customer Service Officer Dianne Johnson, who has served the community at Makino for nearly 33 years. For Dianne, seeing Mac each morning is a treasured routine. “She’s very special,” she says. “She’s the highlight of my day.”

Mac is more than a stray, she’s family. She has her own locker in the staff room, complete with a name label and a photo, where her treats and food are kept. Visitors love her too; it’s not uncommon to see people stopping by just to say hello.

Despite the age-old belief that cats and water don’t mix, Mac seems to have found the perfect balance. She spends most mornings indoors enjoying pats and staff company, and in the afternoons, she prefers a quiet stroll along the footpath.

Mac reminds us that it’s not just the facilities or programmes that make Makino special it’s the people and pets who create the welcoming atmosphere. Whether you’re a colleague or a customer, Mac is always ready to offer a warm, furry hello.
