Dive Into Emergency Readiness!

This January, Makino Aquatic Centre is helping kids and families learn how to be ready for anything. As part of Emergency Management Readiness Week from 5–11 January 2026, families can join Manawatū Community Hub Libraries (MCHL) and the Manawatū District Council for hands-on activities that teach practical skills for staying safe in emergencies.

On Thursday 8 January, Makino will be a key stop on the Emergency Management Scavenger Hunt that starts with a morning activity at Manawatū Community Hub Libraries (MCHL) (link added) At Makino, the focus will be on packing the ultimate grab bag with a supply given for those that stop by.

On Friday 9 January, kids can take part in the Rescue Ready! Emergency Activity Experience, where they become mini emergency heroes. Participants dive underwater to retrieve “sinker” items some essential for grab bags, others just for fun while learning problem-solving, teamwork, and what to pack to stay prepared. Special “Shake Out” swim bag prize packs will reward those who find certain sinkers.

Hannah Tokona, Emergency Management Coordinator, says, “Makino Aquatic Centre is a great place for kids to see emergency preparedness in action. Diving in and learning hands-on helps them gain the confidence to respond in an emergency. Readiness Week shows that learning to be prepared can be interactive and fun for the whole family.”

Emergency Management in the Manawatū region is a team effort coordinated by the Civil Defence Emergency Management (CDEM) Group, with local councils, emergency services, and health boards working together to protect communities and support recovery.

Families are encouraged to join in, get hands-on, and learn together. Dive, explore, and get Rescue Ready!
