Splashing Success for Lytton Street School

Poolside was packed with students, staff, and supporters, all cheering on Lytton Street School Year 3 and 4 swimmers as they put weeks of training into action at the annual swimming sports held at the Makino Aquatic Centre (MAC).

In the lead up to the event, Lytton Street School students participated in weekly swimming lessons hosted by MAC Swim Instructors. These lessons not only sharpened swimming techniques but built the confidence needed for a competitive environment.

“Six schools from across the Manawatū District use our facility regularly for lessons with MAC Swim Instructors. It’s fantastic to see that investment is being made in teaching water safety, developing swimming skills, and then seeing students shine in fun competitions like this,” said Aimee Flanders, Aquatic Services Manager, Makino Aquatic Centre. “We’re seeing a real trend towards schools recognising the benefits of professional instruction and we encourage others to consider making the same move.”

A wide range of races featured, with children competing in kickboard and noodle, as well as freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke across 13-metre and 25-metre lengths of the indoor pool. For many students, the day was about more than placings. It was about trying their best and celebrating their progress.

Lytton Street School’s swimmers demonstrated skills, confidence, and determination built through weeks of preparation. Their efforts reflected not only individual achievement but also the strong support of their school to instil an essential lifelong skill.

Events like this highlight the value of the Makino Aquatic Centre to the district. Beyond hosting competitions, it plays a vital role in equipping children with lifelong swimming and water safety skills.
